When good profiles go bad, and how to fix them
Session Type
Technical Talk
Abstract
This talk explores the challenges of maintaining accurate profile information during LLVM optimization passes, which is critical for effective profile-guided optimization. Current compiler transformations often fail to properly update or carry over profile metadata, leading to degraded performance and uncertain optimizations. The authors argue that profile information should be treated as essential infrastructure. They present guidelines for propagating profile information and the ongoing "profcheck" initiative, which treats absent or incorrect profile propagation as a regression.
